The Seekonk Warriors traveled to reigning South Coast Conference champion Bourne on Monday afternoon and beat the Canalmen, 1-0, in an important early season game.
The Warriors were able to enjoy the hour-long ride home from the Cape thanks to a goal by Isaac Santos in the 54th minute. Santos was able to sneak behind the defense on a free kick by Rony Morales.
“It was a very evenly matched first half and both teams had chances,” said Seekonk head coach Matt McCartin. “However, to start the second half we really controlled possession and moved the ball around beautifully.”
The Warriors (2-0) opened up the season with a 5-1 victory over Old Rochester at home. Playing the reigning champion Canalmen in Bourne, the Warriors had to really hope its stellar defense traveled well – and it did.
“Our defense was solid today and didn’t allow too many quality looks at our net,” said McCartin.
Offensively, the Warriors executed an aggressive game plan.
“We kept them (Bourne) on their heels and got them frustrated,” said McCartin.
