It will be an uphill battle for the 2017 Case Cardinals volleyball team to replicate the success that the 2016 team earned, but fourth-year head coach Michaela Goncalves plans to challenge them daily to carry on the strong Case volleyball tradition.
“We are looking to be as critical as possible with ourselves to improve a little bit every day,” said Goncalves. “We are looking to maintain confidence and composure to continue to build mental toughness.”
Case will still be considered a favorite in a very strong South Coast Conference despite graduating many contributors from the 2016 team.
“I believe we will fight hard in every match to be the best team we can be,” said Goncalves. “We lost six valuable seniors last season, but we have players who played right beside them last year who are eagerly ready to fill those spots and worked hard in the off-season to make sure they were well prepared.”
Those six valuable seniors led the Cardinals to a 2016 state title via one of the most dominant runs a team can have in the play-offs. Case won five straight games without dropping a set in the state tournament.
This year’s squad boasts a mix of newcomers and experience, led by all-state performer Hailey Armburg.
The Cardinals won their season opener yesterday over New Bedford Voke, 3-1. Sophomore Amber Arruda had a great debut with nine kills and six blocks.
“We had a slow start and were down 15-4 in the first set before eventually losing, 26-24,” said Goncalves. “Being able to come back from such a slow start showed that the team knows how to dig deep and turn even the most difficult situations around.”
