Despite coming off a winless 2016 season and returning only six varsity players, third-year head coach Kacie Martel is optimistic that this squad has what it takes to make strides in the right direction.
“I think this year’s team has the potential to do well,” said Martel. “We should be able to hold our own, especially in the small division. We have good returning players and some of the new players who have picked up the game quick.”
Picking up the game in high school has been a hurdle for the Case Cardinals in years past, but thanks to the MIAA granting Case a waiver to allow seventh and eighth graders to participate in high school field hockey this year, the process of getting the field hockey stick in Swansea girls hands has been expedited.
“This is going to help tremendously in building the program and promoting the sport at a younger age,” said Marcel. “Also with the athletes starting in 7th grade, we have the potential of having them for 6 years. It has also helped increase our numbers. We have highest number of players in my three years. My hope is that each year we continue to increase numbers wise.”
The girls will have to acclimate to the pace of varsity play on the fly, as the Cardinals only return six players led by SCC honorable mention performers Kylie Lecomte and Elizabeth Lepage.
“With six returning players and 15 brand new players our goals are pretty wide on the spectrum,” said Martel. “We want to do well in our conference, be more of a threat offensively, teach the new players to love the game and do all of this by continuing to be a team with great sportsmanship.”
The Cardinals kick off their season on Friday when they host Westport.
