Bearcats scratch out Green Devils

VERONA, Ky-The three year old football program at Walton-Verona High School is guaranteed not to have a losing season for the first time.

The Bearcats (5-3) picked up their fifth victory of the year (and most in school history) when the Dayton Green Devils (0-8) visited Verona Friday night.

Dayton looked for their first victory of the year while the Bearcats hoped to stay above .500 and continue to earn a chance at a birth into the All-A KHSAA Playoffs.

The Bearcats took a 21-0 lead into the half and never looked back. Head Coach Jeff Barth wanted more from his team, "We've got an explosive offense and we want to score points every time we touch the football. We didn't do that in the first half," he explained. "The second half we picked it up and we expect big things out of our offense."

By the end of the 3rd quarter the team's lead had grown to 49-0. At that point the new 45 point lead rule started. The clock would not stop unless a timeout was called.

Senior Austin Ryan was proud of the offensive output, "The offensive line is blocking great. We got a couple of backs, Andrew Baumgartener and Ronny Nakes… the boys are running hard. They're blocking, kicking out and making holes everywhere for them, and they respond to it… they were running well."

The Bearcats host the final regular season games at home home against Ludlow (2-6) next week and Eminence (4-4) the following. The Bearcats would seal a playoff birth by winning one of those games.

"We want to host a playoff game and that would be our SuperBowl. So we need to come out here ready to go next week," said Barth. "Ludlow is going to come out here ready to fight. They are a tough river team and they've got a great football tradition."

Bearcats Quarterback Nolan Daugherty passed four times completing four for 65 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Nolan Brown carried the ball nine times for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Andrew Baumgartner had a pair of touchdowns from his seven carries and 36 yards.
