Cheers & Tackles for a Cure
VERONA, Ky-The
Walton-Verona football cheerleaders rallied the
students, parents and team to support their efforts to
raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
"We've had a lot of girls on our cheerleading team or boys on the football team who have had parents or grandparents or family members who have lost to breast cancer," explained senior Brooke Shepherd. "We told everybody to where pink and as many people did as they could."
Senior football player Austin Ryan asked head coach Jeff Barth if the team could where pink socks for Friday's game.
"He just kind of looked at me and grinned," said Ryan.
"I've got an aunt that has cancer and I have several family members who have passed away from cancer along the way," said Barth.
The Bearcats' blue and white colors were over powered with hot pink socks and chin straps. The boys beat Dayton in a KHSAA Class A game 49-0.
"We loved seeing them in pink," said cheerleading coach Bobbie Lillich. "I don't think there's another color anybody would rather see them in other than pink."
"Winning in pink... It ain't too bad," laughed Ryan.
"They say, 'Real men wear pink,' and I think we pulled it off tonight," chuckled Coach Barth.
Shepherd was proud of the participation from everyone, "It was probably the coolest thing I've seen this season."
